Call for Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, and Reviewers for The Journal of Therapeutic and Applied Geek and Gaming Culture (Credentialed Professionals and Graduate Students Welcome)
Use this form to apply by November 21, 2025. Interviews will take place in December and January.
The Journal of Therapeutic and Applied Geek and Gaming Culture (TAGGC) is a new academic journal for professionals studying the intersections of Geek and Gaming cultures and mental health to share their work. For more information about the journal, visit this page.
The journal seeks to expand research affiliated with this and other, similar models in ways that are accessible to academic and non-academic audiences alike. The journal plans to prioritize academic integrity as a fully blind, peer-reviewed academic journal while also remaining invested in diverse perspectives from a wide range of professions for whom the study of Geek and Gaming cultures and mental health are relevant. For this reason, submissions are open to anyone and are accepted on a rolling basis for twice-yearly publication.
We are seeking to launch our first call for submissions in December 2025, and to do that, we are looking to build a diverse network of reviewers, managing editors, and editorial board members to help this journal succeed in its mission. General requirements to apply, as well as descriptions of each position and instructions on how to apply are below.
General Requirements to Apply
- Self-identify as a member of Geek and/or Gaming cultures.
- Have clinical, research, or other professional experience which qualifies you to review journal submissions on these topics. Credentialed professionals and graduate students are welcome to apply.
- Be willing and able to commit to at least one article review between January – December of 2026.
Reviewers
Reviewers belong to a pool of experts who can be called upon to provide peer review of articles submitted to the journal 1-2 times per year. Reviews are invited to review submissions in alignment with their areas of expertise. If a reviewer accepts the invitation to review, it is expected that they remain engaged in the review process throughout any revisions and resubmissions for that submission, pending any unforeseen circumstances.
The reviewer pool is a great way to get involved for anyone who is new to peer review as you will have a lot of support and feedback in the process from the editors.
To apply to be part of the reviewer pool, please click and submit this form.
Associate Editors
Associate editors will be assigned to specific issues of the journal and will be tasked with initial submission review, assignment and coordination of reviewers, editorial decisions based on peer review, and communication about decisions and revisions with submitters. Assignments will occur after the first issue of the journal is released to the public, as the lead editors have already committed to the first round of editorial responsibilities in order to work out any kinks in the process. Managing editors who would like to gain experience during the first round of submissions may shadow the lead editor throughout the process, however, if desired.
Associate editors should have prior experience with peer review processes as reviewers or editors for other journals, periodicals, academic conferences, or similar works. The lead editor and managing editor are committed to building a grassroots community in what we recognize is an emerging field, so we are willing to work with associate editors who have review but not editorial experience, so long as applicants have a solid understanding of the peer review process and experience reviewing and/or editing in some prior capacity.
To apply to be an associate editor, please click and submit this form. Applicants will be reviewed by the Editor and Managing Editor. Those who we feel are best qualified will be extended an opportunity to interview for associate editor positions in the Fall of 2025.
Editorial Board
The editorial board will meet biannually to help determine the future direction of the journal, including its processes, content, and reach. Editorial board members are also expected to serve as reviewers for the journal, at least once annually.
Editorial board members should have prior experience with peer review processes as reviewers or editors for other journals, periodicals, academic conferences, or similar works, or should have served on professional boards in the past, with the ability to otherwise demonstrate competence in academic peer review. The first board meeting will be held in January 2026, after the first call for proposals has gone out, and will largely be about assigning reviewers for the first round of submissions, as well as determining roles and responsibilities of the board for future iterations of the journal.
To apply to be a member of the Editorial Board, please click and submit this form. Applications will be reviewed by the Editor and Managing Editor. Those whom we feel are best qualified will be extended an opportunity to interview for editorial board member positions between December 2025 and January 2026.
