WHAT: Wolf Awareness Week kicks off on October 20 this year, with the official Welcome Day event for Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan taking place on that date.
Established in 1996, Wolf Awareness Week is both a celebration of the unique canine predator and an opportunity for many to learn more about them from a scientific and historical standpoint — as well as their place in our world today.
The annual event kicks off at NHM with Welcome Day: Wolves, a four-hour festival focused entirely around the new photography exhibit. The day will include displays from various members of NHMLAC’s Research & Collections team, including vertebrate paleontology, mammalogy and more as well as activities and programming such as “Wolf Pup Storytime,” “Dog or ImPAWster,” a scavenger hunt and mask activity to entertain and inform visitors. The day will also include a discussion panel moderated by photographer Ronan Donovan and featuring a panel of three experts.

Following the opening event, Museum Educators and other staff members will be including additional wolf knowledge and specimens in their presentations throughout the week.
Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan introduces visitors to wolves as seen by Donovan in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Ellesmere Island in the high Canadian Arctic. Visitors can see — in unparalleled intimacy — how the Arctic wolves hunt, play, travel, rest, and raise their young in one of the harshest environments on Earth. By contrast, their brethren in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are fearful of humans, making it nearly impossible to document their daily lives. These differences can be attributed to the fact that Arctic wolves rarely experience negative encounters with humans or view them as a threat.
Donovan and NHM’s own wolf experts are available for interviews in regards to the exhibition and/or Wolf Awareness Week. Press and media may also inquire about special access.
