On August 14, 2000, Dora the Explorer premiered and quickly became a beloved global phenomenon. The animated show followed a curious young girl and her monkey sidekick, Boots, on interactive adventures. Nearly 25 years later, Dora the Explorer remains one of the most-watched children’s shows in the world, airing in over 150 countries and translated into 32 languages.
Now, Dora returns in a brand-new live-action feature film, Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado, premiering July 2 on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon. This movie marks the launch of “The Great Dora Fiesta,” the largest expansion of the franchise to date. Directed by Alberto Belli and starring Samantha Lorraine as a now 16-year-old Dora, the film brings familiar themes of adventure, friendship, and learning into a coming-of-age context that explores change in powerful new ways.
In this new journey, Dora and her friends venture through the Amazon jungle in search of Sol Dorado, a mythical artifact that grants one wish to its finder. But it’s more than just a treasure hunt—Dora faces internal challenges as she struggles to accept the unexpected changes unfolding in her life. The film blends comedy, action, and heartfelt drama, offering something for all ages.

Though I don’t have kids, I really enjoyed the movie and was impressed with its emotional depth and character development. Dora’s journey feels genuine and relatable, especially in how she processes the unfamiliar and leans on those around her. It’s rare to see a family film that so effectively blends high-stakes adventure with the inner emotional growth of its main character. This story isn’t just about finding a treasure. Instead, it’s about finding yourself in the face of change.
I had the opportunity to speak with director Belli, who described what it means to be part of a franchise with such lasting cultural impact.
“I mean, very fortunate, you know, it is a character that has been with us for 25 years,” Belli shared. “When I became part of this franchise, I felt like a privilege to be able to expand this door.”
Belli began his career as a computer science engineer before transitioning into filmmaking. His deep love of storytelling led him to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, and he’s since directed award-winning films, commercials, and TV episodes, including the holiday adventure The Naughty Nine and the fantasy/comedy Gatlopp.
In Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado, Belli intentionally explored the emotional theme of facing change.
“I think that is one of the things that I love the most about this specific movie… I think everyone goes through a moment where you think you know who you are,” he said.
Belli also emphasized the importance of having support while navigating life’s changes. “I think it’s important to also show that, you know, she has a support. Like Diego (Dora’s cousin) is there with her, their friends are going on an adventure with her.”
When asked what he hopes audiences will take away from the film, Belli answered: “I hope that people really take away that to be able to succeed, you need each other and then also yourself.”
Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is an adventure that not only explores the jungle but also trailblazes through emotional growth, resilience, and connection. It reminds us that facing change can be difficult, but with the right support, we’re never alone in the journey.
Catch the premiere of Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado on Wednesday, July 2 on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, and join the celebration of 25 years of Dora with “The Great Dora Fiesta.”
