Learn the Geek Therapy® Model

The course Geek Theray: Theory, Mindset, and Practice will teach you our affinity-based theory and techniques that will help you use Geek culture and popular media in a professional and ethical manner.

Geek Therapy’s mission is to advocate for and teach the effective and meaningful use of popular media in therapeutic, educational, and community practice. Our organization stewards the Geek Therapy® model and its community through different educational activities, including the annual TAGGS conference and Geek Therapy® Certification.

This course is designed to be accessible to all therapists, educators, and community practitioners regardless of education level and experience. The price for the course is “pay what you wish,” and satisfies the course requirement of Geek Therapy® Certification.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be included in Geek Therapy’s Referral Program of certified practitioners.

Two-Hour Course

The course is two hours, delivered online and live. 2 Credit Hours will be awarded to participants in the United States. Other credentials may be provided in other countries through training partnerships.

Course Description

This course introduces participants to the Geek Therapy® Model, an affinity-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the best way to understand each other is through what we care about. Geek Therapy teaches how to use the interests and preferences of clients and practitioners to enhance the therapeutic process.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify client affinities and integrate them into treatment in a meaningful way.
  • Utilize the Geek Therapy mindset statements to conceptualize cases and assess key opportunities for change.
  • Develop skills related to Geek Therapy tools and techniques, including the GT Library and the 3 A’s.
  • Apply the Geek Therapy® Model alongside other theoretical orientations.

Instructor

Josué Cardona is the founder of Geek Therapy. Josué holds a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and trained in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City. He has 20 years of experience in healthcare, mental health, and education. Josué has presented Geek Therapy at professional and pop culture conferences, as well as through media appearances, to audiences around the world.

Yes! If your company or organization is interested in training a group of participants, please contact us. The course can be tailored to your group's profession and client population.

Participants will receive their CE/participation certificate within 48 hours of completing the evaluation form.

Yes, Geek Therapy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7507. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Geek Therapy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

The course is offered online, through Zoom, unless otherwise specified.

Geek Therapy's Cancellation Policy does not apply to the May 16, 2026 course. Cancellation requests should be addressed to the School of PACT.

Cancellation by Participant:

  • Full Refund: As the course operates on a “pay what you wish” basis and is considered a donation, participants are eligible for a full refund if they notify us at least 48 hours before the course start date.
  • No Refund: Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the course start date are not eligible for a refund.

Cancellation by Geek Therapy Organization:

  • In the unlikely event that the Geek Therapy organization cancels the course, participants will receive a full refund of their donation.

Exceptional Circumstances:

  • We understand that emergencies and exceptional circumstances can occur. Participants who need to cancel due to such circumstances (e.g., medical emergencies, bereavement) should contact us as soon as possible. We will review these cases on an individual basis and may offer a full refund at our discretion.
