WHAT: On Saturday, December 9, 2023, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (NHM) will host the Welcome Day for its newest exhibition, 100 Carats: Icons of the Gem World. 100 Carats brings together over two dozen gems – 20 of which are more than 100 carats, and each is a stunning example of its type.
Welcome Day guests can expect hands-on demonstrations and family-friendly activities as part of the day’s programming.
- Cabbing Demonstration Station: A close-up look at the most popular form of gem cutting. Watch how a mineral can be transformed simply by how it’s cut.
- A Closer Look at Mineral Collections: View some of the Museum’s mineral collections to learn more about their unique properties and how they reveal the scientific story of the history of our planet.
- Gem & Mineral Hall Scavenger Hunt: Fill out the scavenger hunt as you explore the Gem & Mineral hall to receive a prize! (Must be completed by 3pm to redeem.)
- Gem & Mineral Holiday Cards: Color and decorate your own gem-themed holiday card to celebrate the season!
On Sunday, December 10, 2023, NHM will host its first jewelry trunk show featuring stunning handmade creations from local designers Margaret Solow and Jemma Sands. The show’s first hour will be exclusive to Members, while all guests can peruse and enjoy the final three hours.
This exhibition was organized by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in collaboration with Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels.
