The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County will open its new wing, NHM Commons, on November 17 with a festive Opening Day Celebration and Block Party featuring a variety of indoor and outdoor events at NHM Commons and programs throughout the Museum.

Visitors will get a first look at NHM Commons, including Gnatalie the Green Dino, Barbara Carrasco’s 80-foot-long mural L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective, and Collective Knowledge, a photo-based exhibition featuring some of NHM’s extensive collection as seen by photographer Craig Cutler — as well as a Block Party on the new community plaza featuring a Community Resource Fair, food trucks, and music.

The brand-new NHM Commons Theater will host a day of free events, including live performances, engaging discussions about art and science, a Community Ceremony featuring local officials with a special performance by Tierra Blanca Arts Center

Throughout the rest of the Museum, there will be plenty of additional programming (accessible with General Admission or free for Members) including:

Guests will be able to unleash their inner artist in the Nature Gardens with hands-on workshops from local art organizations. In the Grand Foyer, visitors can explore the “Collection Connections” to get a behind-the-scenes look at specimens, artifacts, and the latest exhibitions. Folks can learn about L.A.’s wild side in the Nature Lab, featuring live animals and hands-on interactives. Everyone is welcome to join the Museum’s horticulture team in the Edible Garden as they show and discuss local plant life. And those who need it can recharge from the fun in a designated quiet area in the North American Mammal Hall.

The NHM Commons location of South LA Cafe, run by NHM’s food and beverage partners South LA Cafe (SLAC) Hospitality, will open on November 18. Located on the plaza looking out into Exposition Park, the new cafe is open to the public and accessible without a museum ticket. The new cafe will offer South LA Cafe’s famous coffee, including espresso drinks, and an assortment of healthy and affordable light bites and “grab ‘n’ go” style offerings for Museum guests, Exposition Park visitors and the local community. South LA Cafe is founded by Joe and Celia Ward-Wallace.
