October’s Spooky Surprises and Exciting Game Releases Await

Author: Greg Lozano

Spooky season is upon us and that means that a good slew of titles releasing this month fit the horror profile. Luckily horror is not the only thing on the menu for the month as this month is filled to the brim with titles ranging from VR to console in so many forms of enjoyment. Below is the list of titles that are releasing in October.

Predator: Hunting Grounds (PS5, XSX/S) October 1st

This title was met with good reviews as it is the latest franchise to dive into the isometric horror multiplayer game that several had occupied for some time now. One player gets to take the role as the Predator. While this game has been out for several years on PC, the release of PS5 and Xbox means that crossplay is available. What makes this different from other isometric horror titles is that the human players are not completely vulnerable. Armed with loads of weapons, players are capable of defending themselves against this cloaking foe, but be weary, our technology does not surpass what a predator is capable of.

Until Dawn (PC, PS5) October 4th

Initially released in 2015, this interactive drama horror takes the stage once more to be retold in higher definition. The first release of the title earned it great praise as players navigate through a story where every decision they make impacts the outcome of what exists beyond this terrifying world. If you are someone that has not played the original, this would be a great title to play during the month of Halloween. My only complaint is that the rerelease of a game, not even 10 years old, is being sold at full retail price. For this reason I will be moving it further down my list of titles that interest me, but not quite at the bottom.

NHL 25 (PS5, XSX/S) October 4th

Another pass around the sun means that EA releases yet another annual title with minimal upgrades and charges full retail price. Like all EA annual titles, graphics received a minor improvement, and not much else was added on. There is a stat feature that shows data on rivalries between teams, but if you’ve played and previous annual title, you know what to expect; Updated rosters and stats.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game (PC, PS4/5, XSX/S, Xbox One, Switch) Oct 4th

Quite possibly the longest title that I’ve had the grace to type when it comes to game releases, this is a game that looks to put a smile on kid’s faces, as well as fans of SpongeBob in general. The frantic and almost incomprehensible antics that you expect Patrick to get into happen because, you’re Patrick!

Silent Hill 2 Remake (PC, PS5) October 8th

Konami has released yet another version of Silent Hill 2, and the question on everyone’s mind is, is it better or as good as the original? Early impressions seem to say so as this isn’t the same clunky mess that the HD version was. Players have stated its shere level of terror in regard to atmosphere and rightly so as the original is widely regarded as one of the best horror games of all time.

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred (PC, Playstation, Xbox) October 8th

Diablo 4 has been met with mixed reviews over the past seasons. Overall it is regarded as good, the level of microtransactions really tends to pull players away engaging as much as they previously had, but there still is a strong fanbase. With the new expansion releasing, players will have the ability to play as a new class, experience loads of updated features, a progressing story, and so much more.

Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC, PS4/5, XSX/S) October 11th

The studio known for bringing the Persona series into an incredible hybrid of life sim and RPG is releasing their first original title since their inception. Looking to be a cross between real time combat and turned based combat, Metaphor looks to further evolve the genre they’ve worked so diligently at with a brand new world and story. For anyone not familiar with the Persona series, I recommend asking a friend that knows about it and hearing how much they boast about how great everything about the games are, from the stories, to the music, you’re in for a ride.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero (PC, PS5, XSX/S) October 11th

Dragon Ball takes its fight back into the 3D fighting realm with animation that is out of the world. The roster is massive and fans of Dragon Ball will love getting to pit some of their favorite fights in this dynamic action packed brawl.

New World: Aeternum (PC, PS5, XSX/S) October 15th

It comes with heavy concern that when a company releases a trailer specifying its launch and only shows CGI and no sign of gameplay. While the base game released over 3 years ago and were met with mediocre reviews, it is difficult to find much on this game outside from it being developed by Amazon games. There have been several beta reviews that are worth looking into if this is a game that carries any curiosity for you as a player of MMOs.

Neva (PC, PS5, XSX/S, Switch) October 15th

Made from Nomada Studios, the team that brought the acclaimed Gris comes a new adventure involving Alba and her wolf as they embark in a compelling story through a dying world. Visually stunning 2D animations will grasp in the world in sometimes haunting enemies as well as breathtaking scenery.

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead (PC, PS5, XSX/S) October 17th

Quite possibly one of the most original ideas I’ve seen in a horror video game. Based on the film franchise, The Road Ahead takes the role of an original character in this post apocalyptic world that is infested with creatures that are aggressive toward sounds. In this game players control the protagonist Alex who suffered the loss of her mother, but what makes this horror game absolutely terrifying is that she deals with asthma, and a fit or even the use of her inhaler could put her in jeopardy. Silently navigate your way to complete the story in this thrilling new title.

Unknown 9: Awakening (PC, PS4/5, XSX/S, Xbox One) October 17th

Not to be too harsh on games, but this title does look like it plays similar to most 3rd person stealth/action games. There are articles that state that it feels like a late 2000s game, and it quite possibly may be one of those titles as, “I’ve played so many games like this, but this feels like it’s done correctly.” There are many titles that fall under a generic structure of gameplay or story and happen to do them better than most of what has come out before. Not everything NEEDS to be original, and if that is what you’re looking for, this may be a game worth interest.

Super Mario Party Jamboree (Switch) October 17th

For the first time ever players will be allowed to play Mario Party Board Maps online with friends. Not only that, but there is a 20 player battle royale of mini games that are available along with several unique modes and features. The “Super Mario Party” series differs from the “Mario Party” series as SMP uses Joycons while the latter is open to multiple controllers and omits the unique features of the joycons. This looks to be the biggest Mario Party title so far with a large cast to choose from as well as a multitude of original ideas.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed (PC, PS4/5, XSX/S, Switch) October 18th

TMNT: Mutants Unleashed is a beat-em-up brawler based in the universe of the film Mutant Mayhem. The artstyle carries over from the film and a flurry of actions come at the disposal of each individual turtle. The events of the game take place shortly after film, so if you were a fan of the film, chances are you would enjoy catching up with the story that follows.

No More Room in Hell 2 (PC Early access) October 22nd

An interesting survival game where you get to work with 8 other players, however, you do start alone. The development team stated that they expect early access to exist for about a year’s time, which means they will be taking in a lot of feedback to try and improve the game as it goes. With permadeath being a key point of the game, it will be important to your survival in knowing how to manage your way through this undead apocalypse.

Fae Farm (PS4/5, XSX/S, Xbox One) October 22nd

Initially released about a year ago on Switch and PC, Fae Farm will be making its way onto the Xbox and Playstation consoles this month. This is a farm-sim where you get to build your farm, craft, fish, and cultivate while navigating in a magical world. If you are a fan of Stardew Valley and want a little bit more charm, this may be the title for you.

Fear the Spotlight (PS4/5, XSX/S, Switch) October 22nd

Initially released on PC back in 2022, this 3rd person survival horror pits players in an adventure of unnerving results. Met with high reviews on Steam, players were keen on its atmosphere and its ability to leave players feeling uneasy through playthroughs. For only 20 dollars, this would be a great title to play during the Halloween season.

Batman: Arkham Shadow (Meta Quest) October 22nd

Get to play as Batman in this intense VR title where you, the world’s greatest detective, solve mysteries that lead you to perpetrators, and engage in combat that is reminiscent to the Arkham series made by Rocksteady. The development team has worked their hands to the superhero genre before with Ironman, and this title is looking to live up to the standard that is the universe of Batman.

Romancing SaGa II: Revenge of the Seven (PC, PS4/5, Switch) October 24th

This title originally surfaced in 1993 in pixel form with a brand new 3D overhaul in a completely non-linear RPG adventure. Armed with improved graphics, a music score that will turn heads, and incredible voice acting, this retelling is sure to be quite the adventure for games new and old.

Y’s X: Nordics (PC, PS4/5, Switch) October 25th

One of the longest running RPG series but not quite as famous as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy comes a new Y’s adventure. The Y’s series isn’t known for innovative gameplay or breakthrough graphics as they tend to be more A or AA titles that give players a sense of familiarity to the genre.

Sonic x Shadow Generations (PC, PS4/5, Xbox, Switch) October 25th

Sonic fans rejoice as a new 3D adventure comes out with exciting new locations and that exhilarating high speed action that you are used to. As Shadow players will get the ability to harness his new Doom Powers to rip through waves of enemies. The last Sonic Generations was well received by fans and critics alike, so it’s hopeful that this game can succeed further.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (PC, PS4/5, Xbox) October 25th

While I may not have interest in Activision annual releases, there is a crowd that it does cater to, and it honestly can lead to eSports sponsorships, so more power to those that succeed; and even casual gamers that group with their friends. If this is your game, I hope you enjoy it.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure (PC, PS5, XSX/S) October 29th

I have heard nothing but great praise when it has come to this franchise and I know it is time to start investing into this series. This is the fourth installment to the Life is Strange series and a direct sequel to Life is Strange. Max Caulfield learns that her reverse time ability has evolved into something that allows to peer through parallel dimensions.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket (Mobile) October 30th

I truly believe this is going to catch on like a wildfire. Much like how Pokemon Go allowed us to walk freely around, catching some of our favorite Pokemon, the mobile version of TCG is going to bring a lot of people in, from players to collectors, and it is going to be another huge movement.

Blashphemous 2 ‘Mea Culpa’ DLC (PC, PS4/5, Xbox, Switch) October 31st

New areas, new bosses, basically a whole lot more of what you already enjoy for those Blashphemous lovers. The 2D Dark Souls inspired Metroidvania is highly praised within its community, and for good reason.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard (PC, PS5, XSX/S) October 31st

It’s been 10 years since a Dragon Age game has released, and it probably comes with high certainty that fans of the franchise are excited about this new title.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (PC, PS5) October 31st

If you own the PS4 version of the game, an upgrade to the remaster is 10 dollars, but if you have not played the original and have a shiny new PS5 or state of the art PC, this would be a great time to dive into the world of dinosaur automations and open world exploration.

Metaphor, Silent Hill 2, Mario Party, The Pokemon Trading Card Game, and Life is Strange are all games that caught my attention for this month. And while I’d like to play each and every one, I’m still playing catch up on Zelda: Echos of Wisdom. Please let me know which games you plan on playing this October.
