October 3rd, 2022 – Following news that “A Radical Life” will have its world premiere at the 30th Hamptons International Film Festival, discovery+, the definitive non-fiction subscription streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery, today released a new trailer and key art, providing a first look at the documentary that takes an in-depth look at the radicalization and evolution of Tania Joya. The Original Productions film will premiere Thursday, October 13th, only on discovery+.
Told primarily through Joya’s first-hand account, award-winning filmmaker Ricki Stern (“Reversing Roe,” “Marathon – The Patriots Day Bombing,” “The Devil Came on Horseback”), takes an unfiltered look at the life of the one-time “First Lady of ISIS” and her 12-year marriage to John Georgelas, a Texas native who rose the ranks of ISIS. Joya and Georgelas meet online and quickly marry, united by their shared dream of establishing an Islamic State. But when Georgelas relocates the family to Syria at the height of civil war, Joya begins to question everything she believes and must choose between her marriage and her children’s future. This is the exclusive stranger-than-fiction story of two star-crossed lovers told through Tania’s unique POV.
“‘A Radical Life’ is an intimate, compelling look at one woman’s journey into the inner circle of an extremist movement,” said director and executive producer Ricki Stern. “Tania’s powerful story underscores how feelings of marginalization and disenfranchisement can drive people to violence and extremism. I hope Tania’s journey into and out of extremism – and her commitment to combat it – emphasizes the need for more education and conversation about the forces that radicalize people of all backgrounds and beliefs around the world.”
“The goal for every discovery+ documentary is to generate conversation through unexpected human stories that challenge, inspire and, most importantly, entertain. ‘A Radical Life’ checks all these boxes and more.” said Igal Svet, VP, Documentaries, discovery+. “Ricki Stern’s approach to this complicated story is as thought-provoking as it is gripping, and I’m excited for viewers to experience Tania Joya’s journey and hear this story told in her own words.”
For Original Productions, the executive producers are Jeff Hasler, Brian Lovett and Ernie Avila. For Galactic Globe, the executive producers are Pia Kallinger and Fred Lindner. For discovery+, the executive producers are Igal Svet and Liz Massie.
