The Blue Angels, an elite team of Navy pilots, are known for their precision and control in the air. Only six out of approximately 3,700 pilots are chosen to become Blue Angels. Directed by Paul Crowder, the documentary The Blue Angels delves into the essence of being a Blue Angel, showcasing the pilots’ journey and the rigorous selection process. Pilots who are officers serve on the team for two to three years, while enlisted personnel serve for three to four years before returning to their fleet. The Blue Angels perform nationwide, demonstrating their extraordinary skills in well-coordinated airshows.
The documentary highlights the team’s dedication, with pilots waking up before dawn to train and perfect their formations through meticulous debriefings. The film provides an inside look at the selection process for new pilots and their preparation to take over from outgoing members. Teamwork and camaraderie are crucial for the Blue Angels, as trust among team members is essential for their maneuvers to succeed.
Greg Wooldridge, a former Blue Angel who completed three tours with the team, shared his inspiration for the documentary. “It was time. It was the 75th anniversary, starting in a new airplane in 2021. So it was time to get the blues (The Blue Angels) in front of the American public to lift the country up a little bit. You know, we’ve been at each other’s throats for so long that it was time to take something that couldn’t be viewed as political and couldn’t be viewed as a social issue. It was about the excellence in America of young men and women to bring that into the viewpoint of all the people in this country was important to me.”
The film focuses on the pilots and highlights the crew’s efforts to ensure everything runs smoothly. The breathtaking footage of the pilots flying in close formation is awe-inspiring. Director Paul Crowder hopes audiences will be moved by the dedication and inspiration of the Blue Angels. “The most important, I think, is that hopefully they take away how inspiring these people are. I was completely moved, not something I was expecting. So, what I hope, the biggest thing is that they will be inspired.”
