August Gaming Extravaganza: Top New Releases to Watch For

Author: Greg Lozano

August brings a collection of IPs we love, as well as one of the most anticipated games in recent history. Curious to find out which games you’re most excited for in August.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (PC, PS4/5, Switch, Xbox One, XSX/S) August 1st
This game was loved when it first released, and it is experiencing the same praise. This game is a must play for Star Wars fans, especially those interested in episodes I, II, and III.

Cat Quest III (PC, PS4/5, Switch, Xbox One, XSX/S) August 8th
I didn’t know that there was a Cat Quest 1 or 2, but now that I’m seeing this, I want it. It’s adorable, the site is covered in cat puns, and best of all, it has cats! Seriously, check out the site, and if reading Purribean doesn’t get you, I don’t know what will.

SteamWorld Heist II (Switch) August 8th
A fun geometry based puzzle game where you take control of steampunk pirates and recruit members as you venture the seas. I love when the trailer gives you everything you need to know about the uniqueness of its gameplay. It’s one of those games where I can say it looks like a great frugal purchase for your hours of enjoyment.

Kena: Bridge of Spirit (Xbox One, XSX/S) August 15th
Rather high marks from gamers that have played it. The title is making its way to Xbox and onto Game Pass for those that have the subscription. I would love to hear the comparisons as to what this game is similar to, or what other titles it may remind you of.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland (PC, Consoles) August 16th
A great way to capture nostalgia is to use more nostalgia. Remembering Rugrats of the 90s and toss in an 8-bit adventure, of course it’s a recipe for a sensational overdrive. This game looks fun. It looks to remind people what games were, and why we fell in love with them. Included is an HD version of the entire game, which really allows it to give it perspective on what style of game is more enjoyable for the player.

Black Myth: Wukong (PC, PS5) August 20th
Initially shown running on Unreal 4 back in 2020, the game has undergone a graphical overhaul and is nothing short of a visual marvel from these first time developers. Many have described the title to be that of a soulslike, however, developer Game Science does not consider it such. The inspiration for the story is from the famous Chinese novel “Journey To The West”. This is a title that I am very interested to hear about, as it isn’t often a new studio has such power behind its project.

Dustborn (PC, PS4/5, Xbox One, XSX/S) August 20th
Quite possibly some of the most original stories I have seen of a video game. A mixture of rhythm game with a serious overtone, while also dealing with a relationship sim with crewmates that have unique powers. This looks like a game that could easily build a strong community around the bonds people make with certain characters while all experiencing a unique musical experience to one’s own growth. I would like to see what stands this out from other relationship building sims and action titles.

Concord (PC, PS5) August 23rd
I want to say something good about games that come out. Some highlight that lets it stand in a way where the developers could be proud of their creation, but I am at a loss for words on just how much this seemed to miss the bar with the game it was competing with. Let’s say Overwatch is Cocoa Puffs in this scenario. Concord isn’t the house brand knock off, they’re the knock off that ripped off the knock off. Oh, I have a positive thing to say, it looks like people could spend more hours on this than Kill the Justice League.

WoW: The War Within (PC) August 26th
The long running MMO readies the release of a new expansion. The cinematic trailer released was quite impressive in regard to how far animation has come to the 3D world, but that doesn’t say much about its gameplay. Featuring a new region, new allied race, new end game content, and a large assortment of add-ins for the hardcore WoW player.

Emio – The Smiling Face Man: Famicom Detective Club (Switch) August 29th
The Famicom Detective Club series has been around since the Famicom era as its name implies. More recently, two titles from the past resurfaced on the Switch with a visual overhaul. Just recently Nintendo released a creepy trailer and it was later found out to be a teaser for the team that worked on the Famicom Detective Club series to create another visual novel based around horror and thrilling settings.

Visions of Mana (PC, PS4/5, XSX/S) August 29th
This game looks like a treat for people that want to play a game that feels like it came from the older generation of gaming with tons of fresh new ideas to make combat and exploration that much more engaging. The first Mana series came out on the SNES with the ambition to have a multiplayer RPG on consoles. That wasn’t a concept that was heavily explored during that time, and I’m wondering if the team tried to push a new boundary with this game.

Star Wars Outlaws (PC, PS5, XSX/S) August 30th
I never was a fan of the practice of DLC being announced before the game even releases. It feels like a practice where a company removed content for the game so that if you wanted the full experience, you now have to spend even more money to get the experience you initially thought you were going to get. That being said, it is Ubisoft, so expect the title to be at $34.99 come Black Friday. As far as gameplay goes, take Uncharted and now mix it with Star Wars.

As August unfolds with an impressive lineup of game releases, there’s something for every gamer to look forward to. Whether you’re diving into the nostalgia of Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, exploring the mystical world of Black Myth: Wukong, or joining the feline fun in Cat Quest III, this month promises hours of enjoyment.
