Hulu’s Animayhem: A 2D-Verse Odyssey at SDCC

Author: Tania Escobar

It’s been nearly a month since San Diego Comic-Con 2023, and the enchantment of Hulu’s Animayhem activation still dances in my thoughts. Nestled perfectly behind the convention center along the waterfront, this immersive experience was undeniably the crown jewel of activations at this year’s Comic-Con. Its sheer size and the length of the line were a testament to its popularity.

I was fortunate to be one of the attendees who stepped into this world of animated wonders. From the moment I entered, I was greeted by the Planet Express Building from Futurama, offering photo-ops that were nothing short of iconic. It was evident that Futurama fans, in particular, were in for a treat. But for me, the pièce de résistance was the Solar Opposites experience. Being shrunk by Yumyulack’s shrink ray and placed into “The Wall” was an unforgettable adventure.

What set Hulu’s Animayhem apart was its comprehensive celebration of top animated shows for mature audiences. From posing with TV’s beloved animated families on the Family Guy and The Simpsons couches to seeking guidance from Alanis Morissette in The Great North, the activation was a smorgasbord of iconic moments. The attention to detail, from Roger’s outfits in American Dad to the restaurant counter in Bob’s Burgers, was unparalleled. Lucky attendees even scored an actual burger to pose with!

Hulu masterfully played with perspective and size to transport attendees into a 2D world. The optical illusions, combined with 3D objects designed in 2D style, created a surreal experience that was both comically flat and delightfully skewed. This activation was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for many attendees, including myself. Shows that defined our teenage years were brought to life, making it the most captivating activation at the convention.

As common for SDCC events, the activation concluded with some pretty neat swag. Some posters, enamel pins, and an activation-exclusive Hulu-green bag that gives the illusion of being 2D.

While many photo-ops were at Comic-Con, Hulu’s Animayhem stood out for its unique blend of nostalgia and innovation. The Rick and Morty activation area by Adult Swim, strategically placed next to the Animayhem experience, was another notable highlight, given the show’s massive fanbase.

Amid the excitement, a special mention of the accommodating staff at the Animayhem activation must be made. The summer heat combined with hours of standing can be quite taxing. Recognizing this, the thoughtful staff ensured attendees were well-hydrated by handing out water. Additionally, giant fans were strategically placed near the ADA line-up, offering a much-needed respite from the heat. Such gestures enhanced the overall experience and showcased the care and attention to detail that went into planning this event.
