NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY EMBRACES EARTH MONTH WITH EVENTS, HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES, ONLINE STORYTELLING AND RESOURCES FOR HELPING TO SAVE THE PLANET

WHAT:

In celebration of its upcoming annual Earth Day event, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) is using the entire month to communicate how the museum has been a steward for climate justice for decades. Between the extraordinary research happening behind the scenes and in the field to the incredible community science happening in our own backyards, NHM parties like every day is Earth Day.

To mark Earth Month 2024, NHM is launching several initiatives showcasing the amazing work its own in-house scientists and community scientists are doing year-round. This includes daily stories highlighting current and ongoing research and discoveries, as well as how each and every person can make a difference for our planet. This content will explore such topics as how paleontology from the age of dinosaurs can shape our ecological future, how a household garden can protect pollinators, and how your smartphone can help scientists learn more about the biodiversity of Los Angeles through the annual City Nature Challenge (the global 8-day “competition” kicks off April 26).

Onsite at NHM, the museum is presenting Planting Ideas, an interactive experience that offers visitors a chance to share their wishes for our planet and how they themselves can be agents of change. Visitors are invited to share one thing — big or small — that says what they can do to help save the Earth. Participants will be given biodegradable and plantable paper made from native California plants to post to a beautifully designed magnetic wall located on the ground floor of the museum.

NHM’s annual Earth Day event will take place on April 21 from 11 am to 3 pm and will include  hands-on activities, up-close encounters with actual NHM scientists showcasing behind-the-scenes Museum collections, a scavenger hunt, live musical performances, and more. Nickelodeon will also be on hand that day sharing the Science of Spongebob and a character visit from the beloved series in celebration of the cartoon’s 25th anniversary this year. More information on the Earth Day festivities will be available soon.

NHMLAC remains one of the leading institutions devoted to the study of the Earth and the singular organization in Los Angeles that brings the study of the natural and cultural worlds to the general public. While NHMLAC’s research has a global impact, community science is a core tenet of its work and helps to make the museum’s research and collections more accessible for everyone in Los Angeles and beyond.
