It’s officially awards season. The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards have come and gone. Next is the SAG Awards, which occur on Sunday, January 27th, 2019, at 5 pm PT on TNT and TBS. It is one of my favorite award shows because I vote for who I believe deserves the award. In this article, I will give you my predictions and tell you my vote. Simply, my predictions are who I think will win, and my pick is who I voted to win.
MOVIE CATEGORIES
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
- Nominees: A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlackKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians.
- My prediction: Bohemian Rhapsody.
- My vote: Bohemian Rhapsody. Bohemian Rhapsody was a very well-acted movie, from top to bottom. As a huge Queen fan with high expectations for their representation, the actors checked all the boxes with me.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
- Nominees: Glenn Close (The Wife), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
- My prediction: Glenn Close.
- My vote: Olivia Colman. While I didn’t care much for The Favourite as a movie, Olivia Colman’s performance was the only factor that helped me make it through to the movie’s end. She is cold and mean and delivers a performance well deserving of the award. Glenn Close did a great job as a mentally unstable person in The Wife, so I believe she will win the award.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
- Nominees: Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), and John David Washington (BlackKKlansman).
- My prediction: Rami Malek.
- My vote: Rami Malek. This is one of those categories where truly everyone delivered something special in their respective roles. Malek stood out because he did his homework to bring the great Freddie Mercury to life. He moved like him, he sang like him, and he even looked like him.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
- Nominees are: Emma Stone (The Favourite), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), and Amy Adams (Vice).
- My prediction: Margot Robbie.
- My vote: Amy Adams. Amy Adams did an incredible job portraying Vice President Lynne Cheney. I discovered she was a stone-cold driving force behind the secretive man through her work. Margot Robbie deserves the award because her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth was believable.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
- Nominees are: Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy), Adam Driver (BlackKKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
- My prediction: Sam Elliott.
- My vote: Mahershala Ali. Elliott has been around for a long time without much recognition. I think his peers will vote for him in a worthy performance this time. I voted for Ali because he was the great opposite of Viggo Mortensen. If you haven’t seen the Green Book, you’re missing a gem. Ali and Mortensen have such great chemistry on screen, and the story is amazing.
TELEVISION CATEGORIES
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
- Nominees: The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, and This Is Us.
- My prediction: This Is Us.
- My vote: This Is Us. The show does not have a single dent in its cast. It is dentless. Solid performances from Sterling K. Brown to Chrissy Metz. It is my favorite tv show currently.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
- Nominees are: Julia Garner (Ozark), Laura Linney (Ozark), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
- My prediction: Sandra Oh.
- My vote: Sandra Oh. Full disclosure, I have never seen Killing Eve but Sandra Oh won at the Golden Globes and I have a hunch she will win here as well.
The Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
- Nominees are: Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), John Krasinski (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).
- My prediction: Joseph Fiennes.
- My vote: Sterling K. Brown. Fiennes’ performance has been chilling throughout the entire series and he does it so well. He is very deserving of the award without question. I voted for Brown, however, because the guy is just an incredible actor that always delivers a solid performance episode after episode.
The Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
- Nominees: GLOW, Atlanta, Barry, The Kominsky Method, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
- My prediction: The Kominsky Method.
- My vote: The Kominsky Method. Again, I have not seen The Kominsky Method yet, but I’ve heard nothing but positive responses about it. I will get around to it on Netflix soon.
The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
- Nominees: Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Alison Brie (GLOW), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie).
- My prediction: Rachel Brosnahan.
- My vote: Lily Tomlin. Though Brosnahan is immaculate in Mrs. Maisel, Lily is the one who makes me laugh.
The Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
- Nominees: Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), Bill Hader (Barry), Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Henry Winkler (Barry).
- My prediction: Alan Arkin.
- My vote: Alan Arkin. Again, I have yet to see The Kominsky Method but I have all the faith that Alan Arkin is one of the best actors of our time.
The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series
- Nominees: Amy Adams (Sharp Objects), Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora), Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), Penelope Cruz (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story), and Emma Stone (Maniac).
- My prediction: Patricia Arquette.
- My vote: Patricia Arquette. Escape at Dannemora was excellent, and Arquette was amazing in it. She won the Golden Globe for her role as Joyce Mitchell, and she deserves the SAG Award.
The Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series
- Nominees: Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story), Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal), Anthony Hopkins (King Lear), and Bill Pullman (The Sinner).
- My prediction: Darren Criss.
- My vote: Darren Criss. This is a lock. Criss did a phenomenal job of playing Versace’s fanatical killer.
STUNT CATEGORIES
The Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
- Nominees: Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Black Panther, and Mission Impossible: Fallout.
- My prediction: Black Panther.
- My vote: Mission Impossible: Fallout. Black Panther is a well-made movie loaded with stunts married with a huge helping of CGI. Visually it was awesome, and the movie was just fun. That being said, Mission Impossible: Fallout was one of my favorite movies of 2018, and watching Tom Cruise jump from an airplane was pretty breathtaking on an IMAX screen. This, along with all the car and motorcycle chases woven within its great story, is why it got my vote.
Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series
- Nominees: GLOW, Marvel’s Daredevil, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Walking Dead, and Westworld.
- My prediction: Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
- My vote: Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. The show is almost too big for TV. Stunts galore fuel this pulse pounding series.
