Through Dangers Untold: A Nostalgic Dive into Labyrinth’s Comic Adaptation

Author: Tania Escobar

BOOM! Studios brings us Labyrinth: The Original Motion Picture Adaptation, a comic that feels like it truly belongs in the 1980s. The art and colors capture the era’s comic book aesthetic so well that it almost seems like this adaptation could have come before the 1986 Jim Henson film. While the characters look a little different from their on-screen counterparts, I loved reading this comic and experiencing a fresh perspective on a lifelong favorite.

As I read, I heard the voices of the actors and puppets in my head, which speaks to how well the comic captures the essence of the film. Memorable moments are carefully adapted, with added dialogue and details that deepen the story. Even though I’ve seen Labyrinth countless times, this comic made the journey through the Goblin King’s domain feel new again.

One of the biggest surprises was the Chilly Down scene with the Fire Gang. In the comic, they’re actually called Fireys and attempt to help Sarah navigate the Labyrinth—though, predictably, their efforts are in vain. Seeing them as more than chaotic tormentors was a refreshing twist.

Another moment I appreciated was Sarah’s interaction with the door guards, where she faces the classic logic puzzle. I reread that scene multiple times, hoping this would finally be the moment it clicked for me—but even in comic form, I still couldn’t wrap my head around the riddle!

My absolute favorite part of the comic was my favorite scene from the film: the ballroom dream sequence. The adaptation presents it differently, showing the masquerade happening inside the castle rather than as a dream-like bubble. For years, fans (myself included) have debated whether this was a real event or just an illusion. The comic gives us a small but significant clue: Sarah actually has dialogue in this scene, something missing from the film. Her brief words left me wondering—did Jareth truly love Sarah? Was she close to falling for him? Maybe it’s just a long-held girlish thought, but that single line gave me some clarity I never expected to find.

Reading this comic took me back to my childhood, reliving Labyrinth in a new way. While I missed the iconic music and songs, I’ve listened to the soundtrack enough times to fill in the gaps. Now, I can read through the comic just as often and add it to my collection. For fans of the film, I highly recommend picking up a copy—it’s a fascinating way to compare and rediscover your favorite moments from the Labyrinth.
